Ten Commandments Follow Up

Our sessions always begin with an ice breaker to meet a few more new friends.

We opened with a Veteran’s Prayer and remembered the dead, especially those who have no one to pray for them, as our church does for the month of November. Next we circle around the enthroned the bible and open to our gospel passage from the prior mass, re-read and listen, then reflect on what it must have been like for the people in the story, and next on how it might apply to us today. We read the story of the Poor Woman who gave her last 2 coins. Mark 12: 41:44.

Parents were then invited for some fellowship to build our faith community in the church basement meeting area. They watched the 2nd episode of The Wild Goose series with Fr. Dave Pivonka, about how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. That was followed with some communal prayer time in the Church before rejoining the kids in the gym. The Kindergarten to 4th graders learned a way to remember the commandments with hand signals from this video. See if they remember!:

Here they are performing it at our program - so cute!

Next they watched one of the Blessed videos clips that we use for our sacrament prep. It explains to the kids how and why we got the commandments:

They also played a “pick sticks” game to practice remembering them, and Mrs. Nappo and Mrs. Kelly helped them learn what they mean.

The 5th to 7th graders and 8th to 10th graders had a mini lesson on the ways natural and public community laws came to be and then how and why the commandments came to us from God to Moses in the Old Testament. Followed with discussion on what they mean and how to apply them to ourselves today, especially to young people. This was followed with activity matching commandment cards with a situation cards, where people chose to listen to their conscience and behave in a way that obeyed each commandment.

We closed with this Ten Commandments Prayer
