Who is Jesus? Who are SAFE adults and SAFE SPECIAL adults? How do our teens keep themselves safe and help their friends stay safe? Who is St. Francis of Assisi? How does the prayer process or spontaneous prayer work? All these topics were touched upon during our first gathering. In addition, some of our parents stayed and began a group of their own, in the church basement gathering area.

SAFETY
To keep our kids safe, we not only have special ongoing training for all adults who have leadership roles, but also special training for kids. This has been in practice for almost 20 years through VIRTUS and Protecting God’s Children program. The kids program is called Empowering God’s Children, and Marlene sent you information previously on Flocknotes about the lessons we presented this year. Again, if your kids missed class, or you are interested in seeing what was showed, here are the Youtube links below. It appears the videos they provide us are the same year to year, but the focused topic, activities or worksheets change year to year, with this year’s theme being Identifying Safe Adults, and Safe Special Adults. The HS activity focused on how to give appropriate advice to friends in need of help.
Also below the video links is the complete Teaching Boundaries and Safety Guide for Parents. Pages 5 – 8 are relevant to this years’ theme.

PRAYER and ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI:
At Father George’s requests we are incorporating more spontaneous prayer opportunities into each lesson this year. We spent some time talking about how to pray, the prayer process, or created Prayers of the Faithful for our next youth mass.
October 4th is the Feast of St. Francis, so we spent some time learning about him, his Peace Prayer and closed our evening singing Make Me a Channel of Your Peace/ Prayer of St. Francis.
Peace Prayer of Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
